Categories of Cruise Companies

Below is a list of the major cruise lines in the industry separated by service category (Mainstream, Premium, and Luxury). Each cruise name links to a list of cruise ships for that respective company.

Mainstream
-Carnival Cruise Lines
-Disney Cruise Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Royal Caribbean International

Premium
-Celebrity Cruises
-Holland America Line
-Princess Cruises
-Costa Cruises

Luxury
-Cunard Lines
-Crystal Cruises
-Oceania Cruises
-Orient Lines
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Seabourn Cruise Line
-Seadream Yacht Club
-Silversea Cruises
-Windstar Cruises

For the time being I have used the typical names for each category of cruise line. Each description (Mainstream, Premium, and Luxury) do not do a great job in explaining the true nature of each company, therefore I have listed below a more in depth description of each category.

Mainstream: These companies typically have the largest ships and sail in and out of major ports. Around vacation time these cruises are filled with families. While being the most inexpensive category of the three, it still manages to offer enough programs to suit families of all ages.

Premium: This is a step up from mainstream. Expect to pay a little more for these cruise lines as they typically have less passengers and better service than the Mainstream cruise lines. These companies have ships both big and small and try to serve the major ports of the Mainstream cruise lines as well as small ports that the Mainstream cruise line ships can not service. I highly recommend this category for families of all ages who want to have a little taste of luxury while on their cruise. If you start cruising with young kids I recommend the Mainstream category originally and then as your children get older progress to the Premium cruise lines.

Luxury: These cruise lines are the most expensive and the least family friendly. Expect retirees and elders on these ships. They provide top-notch service and an amazing vacation if you can manage the leave the kids behind. These lines have the smallest ships of the three categories, and by far the most elegant ships afloat. With such small ships these cruise lines have the ability to service ports that most people have never heard of and stop in the most remote exotic places in the world, making for an interesting and beautiful vacation. Keep in mind that these ships will also service the main ports of the Mainstream and Premium cruise lines so double-check the itinerary before booking. I highly recommend these ships for people who are willing to pay top dollar for a vacation while never having to dip into your pockets once on your voyage. Luxury cruise lines are best for older couples who want to get away and think about nothing but relaxing.

Just remember, as with anything, in the cruise business, you pay for what you get. Much more is included on the Luxury cruise lines compared to the other two. If you are traveling as a family and you want great service, Premium is the way to go. For those people who are on a budget or who do not mind a little lapse in service and huge crowds on ships, Mainstream cruise lines are right for you.

Also, keep in mind that just because it costs more does not mean that it fits your needs the best. There are plenty of people who can afford luxury cruises, but I would never recommend they go on a luxury cruise because they are traveling with young kids. Each category of cruise company is suited for a different style and type of cruiser. I hope this blog helps you find the cruise that fits you best.

A List of Places Serviced by Cruise Lines and Which Cruise Lines Service Each Destination

There are many different destinations that cruises travel to. They range from the touristy Caribbean adventure to the exotic South Pacific and everything in between. Below is a broad list of destinations serviced by cruises, a detailed description of each destination, and a list of which lines serve that particular destination:

Friday, August 26, 2005

Africa/Asia/India

Most of the destinations in Africa, Asia, and India are serviced as part of a bigger cruise. Many World Cruises and Mediterranean cruises will service ports in Africa, Asia, and India. It is rare that you will find a cruise specific to Africa or India. On occasion cruise lines will have a few routes that only go to Asian ports of call (these cruises tend to also include Southeast Asia and the South Pacific).

Cruise Lines That Service Africa/Asia/India:
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Holland America Line
-Oceania Cruises
-Orient Lines
-Princess Cruises
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Seabourn Cruise Line

Alaska/Pacific Northwest

Alask/Pacific Northwest cruises are typically done in the summer months and include the Alaskan Glaciers and stops in between Seattle and Alaska, including Canada. Ships usually do not stop in Alaska as part of a bigger trip, but rather have routes dedicated solely to Alaska.

Cruise Lines That Service Alaska/Pacific Northwest:
-Carnival Cruise Line
-Celebrity Cruises
-Crystal Cruises
-Holland America Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Princess Cruises
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Royal Caribbean International
-Silversea Cruises

Australia & New Zealand

My personal favorite cruise was to Australia/ New Zealand. During holiday season a few cruise companies will have cruise ships that go from Sydney to Auckland and vice versa. Other than these trips, Australia and New Zealand are typical destinations on World Cruises and cruises that include the South Pacific and Asia.

Cruise Lines That Service Australia & New Zealand:
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Holland America Line
-Princess Cruises
-Seabourn Cruise Line

Bermuda

Many cruises leaving from Boston or New York will make their first port of call in Bermuda. Bermuda is typically only serviced as part of these East Coast cruises. Sometimes short cruises out of Florida will include Bermuda as well as the Bahamas as part of their itinerary.

Cruise Lines That Service Bermuda:
-Carnival Cruise Line
-Celebrity Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Royal Caribbean International

Canada/New England/Eastern US

Leaving out of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, Canada/New England/Eastern US cruises tend to travel north into Canada and the very Northeast of the US. They tend to be very historical cruises that are run only in the summer for obvious reasons. There is an occasional cruise that leaves out of the Northeast in the fall and winter with their first port of call being Bermuda on their way to the Caribbean.

Cruise Lines That Service Canada/New England/Eastern US:
-Carnival Cruise Line
-Celebrity Cruises
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Holland America Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Princess Cruises
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Royal Caribbean International
-Seabourn Cruise Line

Caribbean Cruises

Caribbean Cruises are by far the most popular cruise destination in the world. The main embarkation ports for the Caribbean are Fort Lauderdale, Miami, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and Puerto Rico. Cruise lines are also starting to open up Louisiana and Texas as places to start a cruise vacation. These are the most popular places for cruises to start because of their large airports compared to the other Caribbean Islands. A typical Caribbean cruise includes a few islands on a 7-day round trip vacation. The Caribbean cruising experience is where every first time cruiser should start. A fairly new addition to Caribbean cruising is the cruise lines private islands where passengers can relax on the beach and enjoy water sports without having to worry about the hassles associated with going to beaches at typical ports of call. Most of the major cruise lines now have private islands in the Caribbean. While the Caribbean is extremely popular in the winter, numerous cruise lines service the Caribbean year round.

Cruise Lines That Service The Caribbean:
-Carnival Cruise Line
-Celebrity Cruises
-Costa Cruises
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Disney Cruise line
-Holland America Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Oceania Cruises
-Orient Lines
-Princess Cruises
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Royal Caribbean International
-Seabourn Cruise Line
-Seadream Yacht Club
-Silversea Cruises
-Windstar Cruises

Cruise to Nowhere

Cruises to Nowhere are typically out of the East Coast and are no longer than a few days. They give people a chance to relax without thinking about ports of call. Consider a cruise to nowhere a floating hotel.

Cruise Lines That Have Cruises to Nowhere:
-Carnival Cruise Line
-Cunard Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Seabourn Cruise Line
-Silversea Cruises

Galapagos Islands

A cruise to the Galapagos Islands is truly an unbelievable trip. These cruises are specific to the Galapagos and stop at all the islands along the way. Sometimes South American cruises will leave the continent for a few days and stop by at Galapagos Islands.

Cruise Lines That Service The Galapagos Islands:
-Celebrity Cruises

Hawaiian Islands

There are many ways to do a Hawaii cruise. There is the 15-day trip that usually starts and ends in California. These cruises sail out to Hawaii; cruise around the islands, and then return. Such a trip is ideal for people who enjoy days at sea. The other option is flying out to Hawaii and cruising around the islands for a week and then flying home. Either way, one of the most popular things to do in Hawaii is enjoy the numerous golf courses on every island. There are a few ships that are service only Hawaii and spend the entire year circling around the different islands. Hawaii is also a popular destination for South Pacific and World Cruises.

Cruise Lines That Service The Hawaiian Islands:
-Carnival Cruise Line
-Celebrity Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Holland America Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Princess Cruises
-Royal Caribbean International

Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea is where most of the cruise lines send their ships for the summer. They serve their time in the Caribbean in the winter, and then head to the Mediterranean in the summer. Almost all cruise lines will have Mediterranean dedicated cruise itineraries. These trips provide an even balance between history and the most gorgeous water and islands you will ever encounter. A trip to the Mediterranean should be the trip of a lifetime.

Cruise Lines That Service The Mediterranean Sea:
-Carnival Cruise Line
-Celebrity Cruises
-Costa Cruises
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Holland America Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Oceania Cruises
-Orient Lines
-Princess Cruises
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Royal Caribbean International
-Seabourn Cruise Line
-Seadream Yacht Club
-Silversea Cruises
-Windstar Cruises

Mexican Riviera/West Coast US

Mexican Riviera/West Coast US cruises are very much like Caribbean Cruises except on the West Coast. They typically leave from Los Angles or San Diego and go south to Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and other ports located on Baja California.

Cruise Lines That Service Mexican Riviera/West Coast US:
-Carnival Cruise Line
-Celebrity Cruises
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Disney Cruise line
-Holland America Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Oceania Cruises
-Princess Cruises
-Royal Caribbean International
-Windstar Cruises

Northern Europe

Northern European cruises are essentially Mediterranean cruises, but they service a different part of Europe. They do not include the Mediterranean, but rather the waterways North of the European Continent. They typically include England, Ireland, Russian, the Scandinavian Fjords, and the Baltic Sea. People take these cruises more for the ports of call and less for the time at sea. The beauty of a cruise is that one can stop at so many historical cities while only going on one vacation.

Cruise Lines That Service Northern Europe:
-Costa Cruises
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Oceania Cruises
-Orient Lines
-Seabourn Cruise Line
-Silversea Cruises

Panama Canal

Panama Canal trips are usually part of either a world cruise or a Caribbean cruise. Cruise ships will either go into the canal, turn around, and come back out the same way, or they will traverse the canal. Cruises that do the former typically originate in the Caribbean, while the ones that go through the entire canal tend to come from the Pacific and terminate in the Caribbean. The canal is definitely something worth experiencing once in a lifetime.

Cruise Lines That Service The Panama Canal:
-Carnival Cruise Line
-Celebrity Cruises
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Disney Cruise line
-Holland America Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Oceania Cruises
-Orient Lines
-Princess Cruises
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Royal Caribbean International
-Seabourn Cruise Line
-Silversea Cruises
-Windstar Cruises

South America

Some of the longest cruise itineraries can be found in South America, as these vacations tend to encompass the entire continent. Usually South American cruises will be one segment of a larger world cruise. It is not typical to find a 7-day South American cruise, but if you have the time to dedicate to a long cruise, a trip to South America is certainly worth it. This is especially true if the itinerary includes Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands.

Cruise Lines That Serve South America:
-Celebrity Cruises
-Costa Cruises
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Holland America Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Oceania Cruises
-Orient Lines
-Princess Cruises
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Seabourn Cruise Line
-Windstar Cruises

South Pacific

Most cruises to the South Pacific circle around Tahiti with occasional trips to Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. A few cruise companies have ships dedicated solely to destinations in Tahiti and the South Pacific because of their remoteness (Princess Cruise Lines has at least one ship, the Tahitian Princess, that is always in Tahiti). Also, do to the size of the Pacific Ocean, Tahiti and the South Pacific tend to draw many World Cruises.

Cruise Lines That Serve The South Pacific:
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Holland America Line
-Princess Cruises
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Seabourn Cruise Line
-Silversea Cruises

Transatlantic

Transatlantic cruises can either be cross the Atlantic for the sake of crossing the ocean (like in the old days of cruising) or as a repositioning cruise. Repositioning cruises occur because at the end of every season ships need to go from the Caribbean to Europe and vice versa. These voyages tend to be fairly empty and relatively inexpensive, even on luxury ships. The typical transatlantic voyage that is not done as a repositioning cruise is New York to Southampton or Dover. Other transatlantic destinations include Miami, Lisbon, and other ports located on the Atlantic Ocean. A crossing can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks, depending on the ports of call and the purpose of the cruise.

Cruise Lines That Sail Transatlantic:
-Carnival Cruise Line
-Celebrity Cruises
-Costa Cruises
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Norwegian Cruise Line
-Oceania Cruises
-Orient Lines
-Royal Caribbean International
-Seabourn Cruise Line
-Seadream Yacht Club
-Windstar Cruises

World Cruises

If you can find the time, a world cruise is by far the best way to see the world. Take everything that I explained above and put that into one huge vacation. World Cruises are usually 100-200 days in length and sold in 30-day sections. This way you can do one or two parts of a world cruise without committing yourself to a vacation that is over 3 months long (not that there is anything wrong with something like that). World Cruises are the ultimate in cruising and should be enjoyed by all; time permitting of course.

Cruise Lines That Sail World Cruises:
-Crystal Cruises
-Cunard Line
-Holland America Line
-Radisson Seven Seas Cruises
-Silversea Cruises
